Mezzanine

The mezz is the super dynamic extra layer between the ground and upper floors… it involves a loading dock, a catwalk, a triangle shaped room and some of the most visible space in the entire building. It spans from the northern corner of the old Hazelwood building to the far end of the storage building, connected by a new catwalk through the lobby. more

My other space is for bike parking

Leftbank is conceived as point in the city where many of the great threads of Portland culture weave together… early on there was a sketchbook, and a scribbled list within whose first word was “bikes”. Many moons later there are stamped drawings of showers and locker rooms, and loads of space dedicated to long term parking… and plans for the framebuilder’s shop, and for the school where she learned to do her thing. Somehow connected to that came the so-called ‘big event’, too, which should probably have another posting on here somewhere. Our hope is to make a tangible contribution to the nascent conversation about what buildings and bikes have to do with each other. more

SOLIDCORE, intelligent design, ORANGEWALLstudios and JHL Design

…thats how we felt when we finally moved into Leftbank a few weeks ago, we are home…

late in 2008 the owners of intelligent design, SOLIDCORE, ORANGEWALLstudios and JHL Design came together to form a collective of design based firms that would share resources, networks, skill sets and backgrounds. we felt the team would be more efficient and run a tighter set of ships by leveraging each others strengths. the search was on to find the perfect space for the new collective. after several false starts (fortunate for us none of them worked out) we found Leftbank suite 202 and knew it was home right on the spot. we can be called “design 202″ instead of intelligent design, SOLIDCORE, ORANGEWALLstudios and JHL Design.

now we are temporarily located in suite 208 while 202 is built out. we will have an architectural, interiors, furniture and lighting resource library at the heart of our space and will make it available for the building to use along with some stylin’ conference and lounge spaces once we are moved in, come by and say hi.

Upright Brewing

Upright Brewing specializes in farmhouse inspired beers rooted in France and Belgium but made with local ingredients and a Pacific Northwest twist. The name is a reference to Charles Mingus and his primary instrument. Mingus was a musician whose compositions defy categorization. At Upright we use a special saison yeast and open fermenters to produce beers that are a true hybrid style, sharing Mingus’ spirit of exercising creativity and craft.

The tasting room is open every Friday from 4:30 - 9pm and Saturday/Sunday from 1 - 6pm.

gallopowell studio

Gallopowell is a two-man collaborative bent on making things we can believe in. From our architectural roots we design, we build, and we dream. Our work straddles disciplines, and its scope ranges from envisioning something like the Leftbank Project to making a little informational sign that reflects it. After more than two years of working here, we’re proud to claim an official space and dig in to continue the work. Onward.
