As Oregon Beer Month is culminating in the wonderful Oregon Brewers Festival this weekend, it seems like an exceptionally appropriate time to introduce Upright Brewing Company to the Leftbank website and it’s visitors. UBC is set to be crafting beer by year’s end and will be a production facility open to the public for tastings and tours. It’s housed in the basement of the Leftbank directly below the corner ballroom where much of Portland’s greatest jazz was once performed. The brewery’s name derives from the primary instrument of Charles Mingus, a man whose music escapes categorization and stands alone with pride.
So, what kind of beer will we be crafting? That’s a difficult question to answer, but imagine combining the spirit and methods of rustic French and Belgian style farmhouse brewing with the positive energy and downright beautiful ingredients the Pacific Northwest offers us. These are beers inspired by historical records and the dedicated few who have kept traditions alive, drawing from our city and region for resources and raw materials. In addition to the year-round brands expect to see several unusual special releases including barrel-aged beers, sour beers, fruit beers, smoked beers, and many other distinct brews. Upright Brewing Company will always be a hands-on, local producer of honest craft beer.
We are sincerely excited about being part of the Leftbank community and look forward to connecting with people personally in the future. Expect to see updates here often regarding the brewery’s news and opening status.

There is certainly room for a restaurant, we’d love to see one in the building we’re also actively looking for a coffee cart or small purveyor who’d like to move in. If you know of someone who might be a nice fit, please send them our way.

Hey Alex, This is Isaac(bj’s). I recently found out you are opening up a brewery! That kicks ass! I remember at bj’s you brewed a Berliner Wiess and some others that i had never even heard of at that time(but enjoyed tasting them). I am living in Utah for the moment, but when I am in P-town I want to taste some of your brews. I read that you might have open fermenters? That is awesome!
